I Have Crowns, Bridges, or Veneers — Can I Still Get Invisalign?

If your teeth are misaligned, you may be considering your orthodontic treatment options. Invisalign is a popular choice due to its convenience, effectiveness, and discreet appearance. But what if you already have some prosthetics on your teeth, such as crowns, bridges, or veneers? Will they affect your candidacy for Invisalign? Not necessarily. Continue reading this blog post to learn more.

Crowns

Crowns are custom prosthetics that are designed to fit securely over an existing tooth, restoring its strength and appearance. In most cases, Invisalign aligners can be customized to fit comfortably over crowns without causing any damage. Teeth with crowns are able to move independently, so orthodontic treatment should be able to adjust their positioning in order to optimize your smile’s alignment.

If you have crowns, Invisalign actually has a big advantage over braces. Often, braces brackets do not adhere well to crowns, which can complicate treatment.

Bridges

Bridges present a slightly different challenge for Invisalign treatment. Because bridges connect two or more teeth, they do not move in the same way as natural teeth. This can limit the movement of the teeth involved in the bridge, but it does not necessarily prevent you from using Invisalign. Your orthodontist will assess the location and type of bridge you have to determine the best approach. Your treatment plan may be adjusted to focus on shifting teeth that are not part of the bridge.

Veneers

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells placed on the front surfaces of teeth to improve their appearance. If you have them, you must consider their durability and placement before starting Invisalign. Fortunately, aligners are gentle and may not harm your veneers. Your provider will gather as much information as possible about your situation in order to determine how Invisalign might affect your veneers.

Each smile is unique, and having crowns, bridges, or veneers does not automatically disqualify you from Invisalign treatment. The best way to determine your suitability is to schedule a comprehensive evaluation with an experienced Invisalign provider. Hopefully, you will soon be on your way to a straighter and more confident smile!
