After a major dental procedure, such as dental implant placement or surgical tooth extractions, you will have to temporarily change your eating habits. Soft foods are much more comfortable to eat and will not irritate your sensitive oral tissues like tougher foods would. Of course, it is fine to enjoy soft sweet treats, like ice cream and frozen yogurt, in moderation. But your body still needs proper nourishment. What are some healthy soft food choices? This blog post offers a few suggestions.
Brothy or Blended Soups
Soup is a safe choice when your mouth is sore and a heavier meal does not sound appetizing. Light broths, like chicken or vegetable broth, can provide protein and hydration. If you want something that will fill you up a bit more, try blended options like butternut squash soup, tomato soup, potato soup, or lentil soup. Just be sure to let your food cool down a bit before you eat it; very hot foods can irritate delicate tissues. Also, remember to skip any crunchy garnishes, like seeds or nuts.
Mashed Foods
Mashed foods are easy to prepare and simple to consume, even if your mouth is sore. Mashed potatoes are a classic choice, but you can also branch out into other options, like sweet potatoes, bananas, avocados, peas, cauliflower, and carrots. For a bit of extra protein, consider adding cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, or a bit of nut butter. Try to mash the food well enough that it has a smooth texture without big lumps. If it feels too dense, loosen it up with a splash of broth, milk, or water.
Smoothies or Protein Drinks
Protein drinks and smoothies can be very filling, and there are countless ways to prepare them. Blend some yogurt, milk, soft fruit, and protein powder together. You may also add nut butter and avocado. If your blender is powerful enough, you can add in some oats (just make sure the final texture is completely smooth). Once you prepare your drink, sip it directly from your cup or eat it with a spoon. Do not use a straw because doing so can increase the risk of post-op complications.
Other Soft Food Ideas
As you begin to heal, you may feel well enough to incorporate additional foods into your diet. Scrambled eggs, boneless fish, and soft-cooked vegetables can be tasty and nourishing options. Oatmeal, pasta, refried beans, and meatloaf are other ideas. Cut your foods into small pieces and chew away from your surgical sites. Continue to abstain from crunchy, sticky, and hard foods until your dentist clears you to go back to your normal diet or you feel that your mouth is totally healed.
A soft food diet does not have to be boring or bland! Plan your meals so they are both tasty and nutrient-dense.
