How Can You Tell if You Have a Cavity Between Your Teeth?

Cavities can develop anywhere on your teeth, including the chewing surfaces, the front and back, and even in the tight spaces between the teeth. Cavities between the teeth, called interproximal cavities, are not always obvious because they are hidden in a place that is not easily visible. How can you tell if you have this dental issue? This blog post explains what you should know. It also provides tips for preventing decay so you can maintain a healthy mouth.

How Do Cavities Between Teeth Develop?

Interproximal cavities often occur when food particles interact with the bacteria in your mouth. This interaction leads to plaque formation. If plaque stays on your teeth for too long, it can damage your enamel and eventually lead to spots of decay.

Cavities between teeth may be especially likely to develop if your teeth are crooked or crowded, or if you have other dental health considerations that make it challenging to clean your interproximal spaces.

Signs that You Have a Cavity Between Your Teeth

If a cavity is still in its early stages, it might not cause any noticeable signs or symptoms. That is why you should be diligent about visiting your dentist every six months; they can spot cavities while they are still relatively new and provide timely treatment.

If a cavity has progressed somewhat, you might notice a few signs that it is present, such as:

  • Increased sensitivity in a tooth, especially when you eat cold, hot, or spicy items.
  • Intermittent discomfort or pain in a tooth.
  • Your floss always seems to snag when you are cleaning between two particular teeth.

If you believe you have a cavity, seek care as soon as possible. Usually, a simple filling is all that is needed to stop the decay from worsening.

How to Prevent Cavities Between Your Teeth

Here are some tips that can reduce your risk of developing an interproximal cavity:

  • Floss at least once a day. If it is difficult for you to use regular floss, you could try an oral irrigator (water flosser) instead.
  • Ask about orthodontic treatment. If it is challenging to clean between your teeth because of how your teeth are positioned, you might need braces or Invisalign.
  • Drink plenty of water. Water can help to rinse away food particles that would otherwise linger between your teeth.
  • Eat a reasonable diet. Sugary and starchy foods are more likely to contribute to cavities than things like vegetables and lean meats.

Cavities between the teeth can happen to virtually anyone. Use the tips in this article to protect your oral health to the best of your ability.
