Jaw pain can be a debilitating problem that hinders your ability to speak, eat, and smile as you would like to. Unfortunately, discovering the cause of jaw pain is not always easy. In some cases, problems in other areas of the body can contribute to jaw pain. In other cases, the jaw itself is the culprit behind the discomfort. An oral surgeon in Lebanon is here to discuss some of the most common causes of jaw pain and how you may be able to find relief.

TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorder, sometimes simply called TMD, refers to any condition that places excess stress on the joint that connects your mandible (lower jaw) to the rest of your skull. TMD is the most common cause of jaw pain, and it may occur due to a variety of factors. Bruxism (habitual teeth grinding), misaligned teeth, a stressful lifestyle, poor posture, and facial trauma can all lead to TMD. If you suspect you have TMD, visit a dental professional who has experience with this disorder. They may be able to pinpoint the underlying cause of the problem and design a treatment plan that helps your jaw to function and feel its best.

Dental Infection

If you ever have a serious toothache that spreads beyond the tooth and into your jaw, seek medical treatment right away. This type of jaw pain is an indicator that you had a tooth infection that has spread into the surrounding tissue. Left untreated, the infection could seriously damage your bone and/or lead to systemic illness. In severe cases, such infections can become life-threatening.

Sinus Problems

Your sinuses are air-filled cavities in your face that function as part of your respiratory system. When the sinuses become infected, or you are suffering from serious allergies, the sinuses can become inflamed and swollen. Thus, they can put pressure on your upper jaw and cause it and your teeth to become sore. Your primary care physician should be able to help you address sinus issues and thereby relieve your jaw discomfort.

Other Causes of Jaw Pain

Other, rarer causes of jaw pain include:

  • Cluster headaches. A cluster headache is a particularly severe type of headache that usually affects just one side of the head. Although cluster headaches usually just cause pain around the eyes, the pain can also radiate into the jaw area.
  • Heart attack. Women in particular are likely to experience jaw pain during a heart attack. If you ever have jaw pain that is accompanied by shortness of breath, nausea, feeling faint, or chest discomfort, call 911 immediately.

Are you experiencing jaw pain in Lebanon? The problem is likely related to TMD. A visit to a qualified dentist or oral surgeon may be just what you need to find relief.
